Emerald ash borers (EABs) are metallic-looking green insects that are native to Asia and considered an invasive pests in North America. The emerald ash borer is also one of the most destructive of the tree-boring beetles. Emerald Ash Borers in Missouri

In the summer of 2018, the Missouri Department of Conservation reported that EABs were found in 11 more counties of the state. The new EAB discoveries brought the number of EAB-affected Missouri counties up to 53 in total. 1. Sugar Maples Don't Produce as Much Syrup as You Think

When you buy maple syrup at the store, the volume of syrup you buy is a lot less than the volume of sap that went into producing it. The tree sap is boiled down to remove much of the water, concentrating the syrup into the product you're used to enjoying.

Assuming the tree's sap is about two percent sugar, it will take 40 gallons of sap from the tree to make one gallon of syrup. The average sugar maple tree produces about 10 to 20 gallons of sap — so you'd have to tap several trees to make just one gallon!

Who doesn't love a juicy pear? Having a pear tree in your yard allows you to enjoy this luscious fruit at its freshest, but sadly, many homeowners are displeased with unproductive pear trees. If your pear tree has been producing few or no pears, don't dismay. Here are a few steps you can take to improve pear production this next growing season.

1. Mulch Around the Tree

Mulch has a number of benefits that help improve tree health and boost pear production. Mulch helps to:

Protect the tree's roots from changes in temperature
Trap moisture in the soil
Reduce weed growth
Impart nitrogen, potassium, and other nutrients into the soil

Although wood chips are the most common type of mulch, you can really use any organic material as mulch. Pine needles, chopped leaves, and even grass clippings are suitable. Straw works really well for pear trees.

If your trees are not currently mulched, wait until the ground warms up, around June, to apply mulch for the first time. Be careful not to push the mulch directly against the tree trunk, as this can lead to rot.

1. Structural Damage

Bradford pear trees grow tall and grow fast, but they are not the most durable trees you can have in your yard. 1. UNDERSTAND THE SIGNS OF OAK WILT

Oak wilt is a fatal tree disease caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum. This insidious oak-killer invades the xylem of an oak tree. The xylem is the vascular system that carries water up through the trunk to the branches of the tree.

Oak trees end up aiding and abetting their own demise as they try to plug the vascular system and stop the fungal invasion. In time, no water can reach the foliage due to the blocked water flow. Trees can die in as little as one month once infected with oak wilt.

Oak trees suffering from oak wilt begin to decline from the top down. As the disease progresses, you may notice leaves on lower branches turning yellow or brown and falling off prematurely.

STOP ALL PRUNING

If you are a homeowner hoping to add beauty, value, and shade to your home, planting one or more Eastern Redbud trees in your yard is a smart choice. Of course, you may not know where to get started when planting and caring for this elegant tree. Here are a few professional tips to help you get started.

UNDERSTANDING

While native to Missouri, the Eastern Redbud can thrive in most areas of the country. It is an attractive ornamental tree that can be used as a focal point in your landscape design or as an accent piece in a natural area or flowerbed.

In the spring, the tree produces deep pink blossoms that linger for a few weeks through the season. The mauve-like color makes the tree pop out against other landscaping features.

REMEMBER SAFETY FIRST

Always check the status of any power lines in the vicinity before venturing out into your yard. Never make assumptions; treat any lines that are down as potentially energized, even if your power is off, and alert your power company as soon as possible.

A relatively young, healthy tree will sustain storm damage much more easily than its older counterpart. Certain types of trees won't bounce back as well if they lose their main leader, while others may thrive.

Quickly removing smaller branches that have been broken by the storm will help the tree heal more quickly. Make sure that your tools are sharp - ragged cuts will create wounds that leave the tree vulnerable to disease and pests. Add an extra layer of protection by sterilizing your tools in a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water.

As a general rule of thumb, the top twenty inches of soil surrounding your tree should be moist, but not muddy. To check the soil, insert a straightened wire hanger into the ground. On the other hand, a wire that inserts too easily into the ground could be a sign that you need to hold off on the extra watering days.
